This Netflix exclusive is a trip back to history on South Africa. ‘Silverton Siege’ highlights a key moment in the fight for freedom in South Africa, at a time the front man of the movement, Nelson Mandela was arrested. The film is inspired by a true event that took place on Jan. 25, 1980 in Silverton, Pretoria.
This movie covers the events of three freedom fighters who took over a bank in Silverton, demanding the release of Nelson Mandela among other demands. Sadly, after long hours of negotiations, the police attacked, killing the three fighters along with some hostages.

Freedom Day in South Africa
Coincidentally, ‘Silverton Siege’ comes out on 27th April, same day as Freedom Day in South Africa. 27th April is the day South Africa had its first nonracial democratic election in 1994, which marked the liberation of Black Africans and non-white Africans from white minority rule and enforced discrimination policies. It also allowed all citizens over the age of 18 to vote and led to the election of Mandela as president in the same year.
